What is malaria?

Ever wonder what is malaria?

Well, for those who are interested in infectious diseases, let me share a little bit about it with you guys. Not that I know a lot about it though.

Well, basically, malaria is a blood disease which is caused by a protoctist called Plasmodium. Plasmodium can actually cause this disease in a variety of organisms including reptiles, birds, not just humans.

For humans, the Plasmodium species which causes infection are P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae and P. knowlesi.

An interesting thing to note is P. knowlesi is actually a zoonosis meaning it naturally infects animals which is the macaques but has been recently to be found to infect humans too. And the main malaria cause in Malaysia is actually, P. knowlesi.

P. falciparum is the leading cause of fatality in malaria. Unlike it, the rest causes relatively mild disease which involves febrile symptoms.

Currently there is no vaccine for this disease. Sadly, 1 million people die annually due to this infection. And 25% of the number are children under the age of 5. Amazingly, there is 300million cases of infection annually too.

Malaria is among the top infectious disease killers around the world comparable to tuberculosis and HIV.

There is always this chicken and egg story. Poverty causes the problem in solving the malarial problem. At the same time, malaria causes poverty in the countries which are suffering severely from this disease. Is it possible to really eradicate this disease?

Should more research be carried out in this field??

Living at present

Some people say we should live in the present and not in the past. Meaning, to look forward rather than what has happened. Though this is a good attitude as we can't really change what has happened.

But excessively practicing such attitude, is it a good thing or a bad thing?

Think this way, something bad happened, you did something wrong. But you practice this attitude and say you want to look forward. When problem crops up again, and you do that again, does that show that you are shunting away from the responsibility? As in are you trying to run away from the fact you need to acknowledge that you have done something wrong? And correct the mistake?

Many of us have ego, so do I, in mandarin "爱面子", sometimes it really is hard to bow a little and say "Yea, it was my fault". I'm not saying that we should verbally express these words, but what I'm saying is we should acknowledge the fault rather than continuing with a 'perfect image' as though we have done nothing wrong at all.

If such situation persists, what would others think? Are you trustworthy? Are you reliable?

Everyone would love a perfect story book in for their life, without errors, without stains, but that never happens. That's why books have editor, most often panels of editors. In life, the editors are our friends. The ones who stand by us when we are challenged, the one who corrects our spelling error and sentence structure in our book.

If there's a mistake and we just go on for the second page and others look at the earlier pages, what would happen?

Living at present is good, but excessively, it shows a different side of the story.

Exam over, results are out...

Exam is over for Yanyan and I.

Amazingly, results are out very fast and surprisingly, most of the class got either H1 (A) or H2A (A-).

Tell me, how do you guys think about this result? There are only two extreme marks!!! OMG, how are we going to distinguish ourselves from each other academically???

Then again, I'm really shocked and happy by what my supervisor said to me:-

"Everything about you is a H1 to me, now we just need to convince the panel that you are a H1 student"

Now that really made me sleepless!! It made me so happy that my efforts did not go unnoticed but at the same time, I feel some guilt coz I know I can do better. Will be trying very hard in the remaining 5 months to do my best!! haha...
